Getting ready to start a new school year can be a time of anxiety and even stress for any family, but especially those families who are managing a chronic illness.
In the weeks before school starts, it can be helpful to begin transitioning back to a school year routine – that might include going to bed and getting up earlier, maybe even shifting eating schedules to more closely align with the school day.
Haley Jinkerson is a
14-year-old from Monroe, WI who has cystic fibrosis. This is her take on the
movie Five Feet Apart.
Being a cystic fibrosis
patient myself, I was so excited when I heard ‘Five Feet Apart’ was coming out.
I was even more excited when I found out that Cole Sprouse was going to be a
lead actor in it. I went and saw it opening night with both of my parents.
When she learned that her son had cystic fibrosis, mom didn’t know much about the disease. Today, the Jones family advocates for finding a cure.
Traci Jones vividly recalls the 9 a.m. phone call from her pediatrician’s office just nine days after her third child, Michael, was born in 2014.
“We have Michael’s newborn screening results,” said the clinician. “We need to see you at 12:30 this afternoon.”
Accompanied by her mother, a nurse, Traci recalls very little from the 40-minute visit with her pediatrician.
